SYNOPSIS

The story has two predominant plot lines which unfold concurrently.

The main plot line begins when Good Doctor starts to suspect that something bad is happening in the dark ops division of DIME’s research branch. She didn’t sign up to be complicit in anything like that, so she takes it upon herself to get to the bottom of it.  As a DIME employee she is closely monitored and doesn’t have clearance to inquire, so she tasks Bodyguard with conducting his own discreet investigation and reporting any findings to her. This is very dangerous for Bodyguard, and while he is under slightly less strict supervision, he is himself limited in how far he can investigate.

He gets as far as he can on his own, but quickly finds that it isn’t far enough. To extend his investigative reach he ends up contacting the leaders of the militia and makes a deal with them: he’ll supply them with information about how to breach and raid key DIME locations, and in return they have to turn over any confiscated files or intel to him. The story proceeds from there mostly following Bodyguard as he compiles his body of evidence for Good Doctor while navigating his precarious position between the militia and the higher-ups at DIME.  The mystery of what the dark ops guys are doing slowly unfolds and things come to a head when Good Doctor gets the final pieces evidence against them.  Around the time they crack the mystery, the DIME leader, who has been very suspicious of why the militia has been so successful lately, discovers Bodyguard’s secret and the shit hits the fan. I’ll leave out the ending for now, because I don’t think it’s important to disclose at this phase, since I’m just trying to provide broad-strokes context for the prologue.

The secondary plot line follows a member of the militia who accidentally contracts Raptus during a raid on a Daydream clinic. As the novel goes along we continue to follow him as he devolves through the phases of infection and tries to keep it a secret from the other militia members. He serves as a device to show the reader what the disease looks like up close, and how the infected perceive the reality around them. As he lapses into psychedelic hallucinations we’ll employ an entirely different, surreal art style to depict the world as he sees it.
